Yup, X works with both PPP and SLIP thru a null modem into a NetBSD 
system.  I've run both from my PowerMac to my BSD system using MI/X on 
the PPC end.  Poor man's color X since my NetBSD/mac doesn't have support 
for color internal video yet.
