I don't know if there is a best version, but I usually have current
running on mine. At this very moment, however, I'm having a couple of
problems (probably .PATH stuff, I'm not sure.)

There are quite a few SE/30's running NetBSD. Check the web page of
systems on www.macbsd.com (I can't remember exactly where it is on there).
