Whoops. I unzipped them on a SunOS machine, and since file(1) labelled
the unzipped file as "data", I figured that was the kernel.

I just now discovered the "Booter Manual" -- in case anyone happens to
need it, it's at http://www.macbsd.com/macbsd/BooterManual.html . It
addresses the error message that I got. ("...silly linux user" -- damn
straight, and they wouldn't let me put Linux on a PPC Mac %^) )
