Seems as though I forgot to mention the specs of the system in question.

* 24 MB RAM, ~300 MB HD
* Tried with cache enabled & disabled -- disabling the cache prevented
  occasional freezes before the error message
* 1 and 8 bit modes tried also -- even though the kernel hasn't started,
  I figured I'd give it a try anyway.

Do any of the developers of the booter have any ideas of things to
investigate further?
