try running in 1-bit color (B+W) or 8-bit color. running on 16-bit seems to
be a common cause for that error...
also, make sure serial console isn't checked in the booter setup.
(BTW, i suggest running in B+W, because dt or xwindows will not run on
8-bit. you really will want to use one or the other as a console interface.)
