Subject: pppd thinks modem hung up

I know this is a little bit soon to re-ask this, but my original subject
line wasn't very descriptive, and I have noticed some ambiguities and
omissions in the original question.

In trying PPP, the system appears to finish executing the chat script
(judging by the send/receive lights, and tested once by connecting to a
PowerMac's serial port w/ ZTerm). PPPd then says that the modem hung up.
In fact, the modem is still connected.

laptop pppd[160]: pppd 2.3.0 started by root, uid 0
laptop pppd[160]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem
laptop pppd[160]: Modem hangup
laptop pppd[160]: Connection terminated.

I've tried both my own scripts (some tweaks from my mklinux scripts) and
the ppp package from puma, with the same results. Since the modem (and in
fact the same scripts) work fine under MkLinux, which uses the same pppd
software as far as I can tell (manual pages are word-for-word and they
behave identically except that the MkLinux one logs everything through
syslog while the NetBSD version dumps the diagnostic information to teh
console), this makes me wonder if there's not some setting related to the
modem or the modem port that I need to change to gain compatibility. The
computer is a PB145, the modem is SupraFaxModem 288 (33.6). I am using
the latest -current snapshots for userland, and a fairly current (I think
Allen supped these sources Monday) kernel.

I already tried swapping ports (using the printer port), to no avail, and
I am running pppd as root, and it's not running setuid to an unpriviledged
user or anything. I did notice that pppd is version 2.3.0 and MkLinux
only uses 2.2 "patch level 0" (e.g. 2.2.0, I assume). Does anyone think
that downgrading to 2.2.0 would fix this problem? If so, does anyone know
where I could find such an animal?

If anyone has ever experienced this and knows of a workaround or fix,
please let me know.

TIA,
