Just wondering if there's an unforeseen problem with PDS cards in
Macintosh LC 68040-based machines, because before I added the ethernet
card, this machine would boot beautifully, and I could run vi, ex, or any
other text editor I wanted to.

Now I am having troubles getting just about any text editor to work on my
Mac. What happens is, if I start vi or ex or ed, I will get a core dump
either after I make my edits or if I try to refresh the screen. This will
happen when I try to save a pre-existing file or a new file. After I get
the core dump, I am unable to get an ls of the directory the core dump
happened in. And even after changing to another directory, and then
changing back to the original directory, ls still reports no files, not
even . or .. But if I use the shell redirection, I can successfully
create new files. I just can't use an editor to display or edit them and
expect to be able to save the result.

On boot, I get the message that kvm_mkdb: /var/db/kvm.db.tmp:
Inappropriate file type or format.

If I manually try to run kvm_mkdb in single-user mode, I get the same
message.

My machine is an LC 475, that boots with a serial console. It has an
FPU, 36 MB RAM, the root drive is a Quantum ELS80, 83 MB hard disk,
formatted with A/UX's HD SC setup. The usr filesystem is an Apple-labeled
Quantum LPS270S, also formatted with A/UX HD SC Setup. The machine has 67
MB swap on the root filesystem, a 16 MB root filesystem, and a 260 MB usr
filesystem. The machine has an Asante MacConi-LC ethernet card in its
PDS slot, that is recognized (its MAC address gets printed out).

I have installed the April 7th snapshot of NetBSD on the hard disks of
this machine.

I have tried this machine with John Wittkoski's HWDIRECT #164, and the
GENERICSBC #16, 25, 26, 27, and 28 kernels, all with the same result.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or information,
Steven
