Someone (Allen or Denny?) committed changes to the source tree
yesterday that were aimed at alleviating this problem.  The
madhatter#39 kernel was built with these changes in it.  I would
expect a new generic kernel sometime soon as well.

p.s.  The network load does seem to affect this greatly.
