I don't know if this helps, but ...

I finally had a chance to install and test Allen's kernel with the 
SONIC ethernet driver on a Centris 650.  I get the same problem
reported by others--it boots without any problems and the card is 
reported as found.  However, any attempt to access it using ifconfig
takes the system down for the count.
