Exact same problem, with the same drive on an SE/30, both as id0 and id1.
I also tried installing to a Seagate 1gb drive, and while the installation
completed, the boot would fail at about the time the system goes to
multi-user mode with scrolling screen-fulls or scsi error messages. Only
way I could get around this was to install to a 730mb Quantum drive on
id1, then use NetBSD to mkfs my partitions and install the tarballs onto
the Seagate drive on id0.

Has anyone noticed that installers after 1.1 write the root partition as
sd0a regardless of which drive you are installing to?
