But not on a Classic II.  I spent a lot of time fiddling, probably too
close to maxing out RAM and disk space, and I couldn't get it to "make"

But the latest version of Perl (5.003) went through its configuration,
make, and install without a hitch on a IIci and Generic-21 kernel.
