Good!  How much did you spend for the 68040, BTW?  I thought of it,
too, but gave up on it 'cause the shop wanted a couple of hundred
bucks for the chip alone (it sure feels steep especially when a 486
chip costs only a few dozen bucks).

I think so.  You might even be able to run it w/o the serial console.
I'd suggest you try one of the latest snapshot kernels.
