do 'startx &> x.log' for csh, i think its something like 'startx 2> 
x.log' for sh, but dont quote me on that. anyway, send the x.log file, 
that will record the messages that go by to fast. which veresion of 
afterstep are you using?? ive got pre2 with no problems. i havent tried 
pre3 or pre4 yet...
