I've had similar results with my Exabyte-8200 8mm drive on the SBC SCSI
driver.  But it works rather well on the ncr SCSI driver, so you might
want to try that.  

Unless, of course, you've already tried it and determined that you need
the SBC driver to keep your hard disks from getting blown away!  :)
