I worked a little bit on it, and got it working. 

In case anyone else wants to try, here is what I did:

create /var/lkm/video

then add a line to /etc/lkm.conf so that it looks like this:

#       $NetBSD: lkm.conf,v 1.1 1997/01/05 11:47:53 mrg Exp
$
#
# see lkm.conf(5) for details.  path will look in /lkm and
/usr/lkm.
#
# path                  options         entry
postinstall     output
#/lkm/if_ipl.o          -               -               -
          -
	  video_lkm_combined.o    -v      video_lkm_cmd
	      -       /var/lkm/video  

Restart, and voila.

X seems to start a little slower, but that may be because
I'm late for work.
