A complete IIcx with the SuperDrive will cost you about as much as the
Extension kit, unless you get a deal on the kit (around $250).  The PMMU is
a seperate item, and yes you must have it unless you put an '030
accelerator in.  You don't need a PMMU with any other model of II since
they all use '030 or higher.

As Bill says it's fine for learning.  How much speed you need to feel
comfortable is a question.  I found my IIcx was too slow on compiles to be
useful, but then I tried moving a medium sized C++ project from work.  It
took too long to compile the whole project for me to ever get to making any
changes before I went back to work and made more changes. . .

I second this.  8MB should be fine if you don't run X.  Can you steal parts
from other computers they are surplussing?

I have heard Daystar (and something like DIMO) mentioned as working.  B&W
and color both work (color is slower of course).  MaxApplZoom works, but
not with X.

Signature failed Preliminary Design Review.
Feasibility of a new signature is currently being evaluated.
