[fsck stuff deleted] -- I think Bill's on the right track with this one, 
probably an incorrect /etc/fstab file.

The procedure in the FAQ is correct only if you have '.' in your path.  I 
should probably change that back to './MAKEDEV', but it was giving me 
formatting errors on conversion to text...ugh...maybe there's some way 
around that...
