There's also a terrific little System Extension called DepthMaster
written by Victor Tan that will do this for you, and doesn't require
modifying the Booter. (Another benefit is it lets you set the proper
color depth for running his MacOS JigSaw Puzzle application.)
With it installed on my system and configured to recognize the Booter it
automatically switches to 1-bit mode before going into the Booter. On
system re-boot it automatically switches my system back to 16-bit mode.
And it works with all versions of the Booter.
