Ick!  That's definitely not right (for illegal instructions to cause
kernel panics).  Perhaps you could post the panic message and (if you
can get it) stack trace from the debugger (trace command, although 'tr'
should work, too).

ktrace is a command and kernel option that allows you to trace system
calls into/out of the kernel.
