Actually, I haven't had time to make a script for my screwy network, so
I can only do it manually.  Here's how I do it.

0) <reassure computer that it is a good computer, and that you like it>
1) tip com0  <-- bare bones comm program
2) <do login in stuff, start ppp connection on other end>
3) ~^Z  <-- delicately suspend tip
4) pppd <-- start pppd, it should realize that you have started a ppp 
	 session, and make the connection
5) fg   <-- bring tip back up
6) ~.   <-- gently kill =) tip, so tip goes away, but your connection
	 doesn't

That should do it.
