Get a red book called _UNIX System Administration Handbook_ 2nd Ed., by
Nemeth, Snyder, Seebass, and Hein, published by Prentice-Hall in 1995, and
read through Chapter 8.  When the book talks about system specific topics,
look for the "BSD" logos.

PS Beware the Mini DIN-8 serial connector pin-out on page 112.  It probably
describes the pin-out of SGIs, but not Macs.
