Is this every time you access the drive, or most of the time, or just the
first time after a reboot?  I've seen the latter behavior with an Exabyte
8200 pretty regularly.  Also, I had a Viper 150 that refused to work with
the ncrscsi driver, but it seemed to work OK with the sbc driver (perhaps
with the error you mentioned at the first access, but i don't remember).
