I've reformatted and reinstalled after having run extensive (8 hours worth)
disk checks which came out fine. I'm fairly certain the problems I've been
having are not hardware related.

Unforunately NFS_22 doesn't like my video-card-less setup.  I get:

Whee! we are the console!
[ preserving 94763 bytes of netbsd symbol table ]
System RAM: 20971520 bytes in 5120 pages.
     Low = 0x0, high = 0x1400000
Non-system RAM (nubus, etc.):

panic: Don't know how to relocate video!

Am I doing something wrong? Can you suggest another kernel that might not
have both the video relocate problem and the disk error problem? Maybe
something earlier than NFS_22?

I'm not going to put another kernel in this machine until I'm sure it
doesn't have

Thanks alot for your help.
