Hmm, I should have mentioned xload comes "shipped" as:

-rwxr-sr-x  1 root  kmem  76488 May 18  1995 xload

This *should* work (as far as I know), but at any rate, making the user 
(who wants to use it) a member of group kmem in /etc/group (as suggested 
by Johan Claesson) works.

Could this problem be indicative of some problem with groups in general 
(for another example, how su doesn't recognize your gid, only the 
/etc/group entry)??  Food for thought.
