I think that there are 2 things you need to do.  One is that you need a 
kernel with options UCONSOLE compiled in so that you can grab the console 
output with xconsole, and the second is that you need to HUP syslogd so 
that it rereads it's config file.  Oh, you also need to make sure that 
you have r/w permissions on the console, I think.
