I noticed a few notes on Modems and HDs plugging into the ADB port.

It seemed that some thought that the ADB port could be used for data
transfer.  One even mentioned the Global Village line of Modems
(Teleport?).

To clear the air on this (or permanantly cloud it), said devices use the
ADB port for power ONLY!  Have worked on a Global Village Teleport Bronze
(2400 baud... instant scrap)... the cables "Y"s at the end into two
connectors... Serial (for data... duh) and ADB for power.  Note these are
low-power devices.
