I was looking through some old boxes and found a 45 meg Rodime hard drive I
forgot I had...bought it about 1989 or so. Anyway, I plugged it into my
SE/30, formatted for one "usr" partition with Silverlining, and used the
MacOS 'mkfs' because I couldn't figure out NetBSD newfs.

Running 'disklabel' from the minishell in the Install Utility returned this:

sd0a: Root 'Root file system' at 96 size 100000
sd0g: Usr 'Usr file system' at 100096 size 100000
sd0b: Swap 'Swap' at 200096 size 40000
sd0d: Usr 'Usr file system' at 240096 size 100000
sd0e: HFS 'Tsunami 65-Q' at 340096 size 130000
sd0f: Other (APPLE_FREE) 'Extra' at 470096 size 9238
sd1g: Usr 'Usr file system' at 96 size 88288

I was able to mount sd1g on /test from the Install Utility, and copied
files to it without any errors.

However, when booting NetBSD...

Can't open /dev/rsd1g: Input/output error
/dev/rsd1g: CAN'T CHECK FILE SYSTEM.
/dev/rsd1g: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck_ffs MANUALLY.

Is the hard drive too old, or broken, or something? Should I try a
different kernel? (i'm using the first color X one).
