I edited macrom.c and defined MRG_DEBUG and low and behold I was able to
get some more info:

I goes through a bunch of messages and stops on...

mrg: w_count_resources called for resource accl: found 0 resources of
requested  type!
panic: kernel jump to zero
<hang>

I'm off to visit my mom, but I'll be looking further later.
