Langdon,
  Are you trying to use the new kernel from colorkit? If not, I do not 
know the solution for you. I have exactly the same hardware and it works 
without problems.

  If you are using the kernel with color support, I would expect the 
effect like you described. The kernel switches to 1-bit mode at driver 
probe stage and your video memory become meaningless. If you look at 
your computer from a distance, random lines will look like letters :)
Try set 1-bit B&W mode before booting and see what happens. The screen 
should blink but remain readable.
