Here is part of a message I sent to Ken about my experience trying the 
new kernel and X server.  Hopefully, it might provide you with a little 
more data:

Ken felt this was probably due to changes in the ethernet driver and not 
really a problem with the grf driver.  I'll check it out soon, though.

Here is the real problem, though:

Here's what Ken had to say about it:

Hmmm.... this is very strange...  It suggests setting CLUT entries
doesn't work on your video card.  Maybe there's a conflict between
it and the internal video, but your dmesg looks fine to me... hmm...
