Thanks for the pointer to the relevant code; like I said, I haven't
really had time to track it down, and I took the easy way out. :-)

I keep my kernels pretty -current. I'm running one from source as of
about 24 Feb at the moment.

The problem is (was) that it did nothing when I attached the terminal to
the printer port. Not even the typical rate/parity mismatch hash (which
I'm quite familiar with).

As indicated above, I'm not even getting kernel messages at autoconfig
time. The problem seems to be further back. However, I haven't tried
this for a month, so if I can find the time I suppose I can try again.
