I observed the same.  You can boot with a serial console
(might be a mac+ running a terminal program with the right
cable).  I have a kernel that boots at my home page.  It is
called "for.mays", probably also on puma.

I eg compiled the TeX package on my colour, now I prefer
to use a MacII I found in a dirty corner..
