I just tried that, and here's what happens...

booting single user was fine as always.
i did fsck to make sure the file system was clean. It was.

mount -u /

mounted root as read write like it should.

When I looked at /etc/netstart all of the variables were set to no, so I
left them. (should some of them been yes. I don't have a network)

I then hit ctrl-D which should boot it into multi user and the followin
is what it said:

swapon: permission denied
unmount: permission denied
ttyflags: permission denied
starting network
add host myname.my.domain:gateway localhost
starting rpc daemons: portmap.
starting system logger, time daemon

and thats where it dies. Now that I look at it again, I wonder if the
permission denieds that I'm getting are my problem. I wrote them off
earlier as because I don't have a network, but now I notice that they are
before starting network.

Any body have any more suggestions.

I don't think I made it clear in my original post that I'm using a
special kernel for the powerbook made by Walter Ruetten. That is why I
tried to boot on the IIsi using the normal netbsd11 kernel. I wanted to
prove that it wasn't a quirk of the powerbook or a feature of the special
kernel.
