Check for /dev/ttyp* in the /dev directory, maybe you just might 
need to create them (/dev/MAKEDEV all).

Look at your tty settings in /etc/ttys if you are trying to log in
as root.
The ttyp* should look like 
  ttyp*   none           network         secure

But it is not a good idea to log in as root from a remote machine.

Get a recent kernel (end of January) from puma or eskimo.
