1.  Run Norton Disk doctor.  Sounds like it could be a problem with the 
catalog tree somewhere.
2.  If that doesn't help try reinstalling System 7.x.  I've seen similar 
problems in some of the labs here on campus on everything from LCII's to 
PowerMacs to Mac SE/30's or older.  Various things can cause this, but it 
doesn't sound like it's caused by NetBSD.

If it's any consolation, my PowerMac at home doesn't even always get to 
the happy mac.  Grey screen, freezes.  Only happens when the power is 
first turned on and a command-control-reset (almost said open-apple) 
cures it, but it's still annoying.
