I can verify that this works fine. I have a real VT102 (paid $5 for it) on
my macII and it works fine with the new kernels even though the console
just sits there.

An added benefit is that I have my son as a user. He loves it, thinks of
the vt102 as his computer, and is learning a little bit about UN*X, enough
to run irc anyway. And I am charging him less than the local isp would
charge, and deducting it directly from his allowance :-)
