My IIci will boot up just fine with colors set to 16 (4-bit depth). But
you're abosolutely right that it won't run X (or even dt) in anything but
one-bit (B&W). As I recall, there was an Apple-script somewhere (maybe
on puma?) that automatically put the Mac into B&W before running the booter.
