The '040 is different, yes.  However, the differences aren't so bad that 
they can't be dealt with in a somewhat sane fashion.  In the hp300 port, 
at least, I count only 50-some times (with the exception of macros which 
might do these checks within them, of which there are a few) where 
different code is executed in the 68040 case, and it's mostly in locore.
