These are the same symptoms I had on my LCIII, with the same card (more or
less).  It was diagnosed then as being a problem with the way the LCIII
handles VIA stuff, so I will at some point look into rewriting ether
drivers for the LCIII.

Anyone know if the IIvx is likely to be in the same boat?

It is possible to get a kernel which skips ethernet stuff - if you can find
someone to compile one for you...
