You have an optimist's view about standards.

Talking about SCSI, you seem to be more or less right, but the firmware
might still have a bug (I remember the Conner 1060s (or something) whose
firmware bug only showed up under Linux).

Besides, standards sometimes are conflicting, incomplete, internally
inconsistent, ... the list goes on, and anybody who ever implemented
anything accorsind to some standard or other has their own story to tell.

X.400 is probably the most widely-known example, depending on whom you ask
of course.  :-/
