Hmm...

As instructed, I have delved inside my LC.  And guess what, it's a SONIC
chip. On it, it says "DP83902AVLJ".

Bugger.

And actually, the apple card doesn't work, as such.  It's just that the
kernel ignores the apple card, and tries to talk to the Asante one.

So, should I try and persuade my dealer to get be a ethernet card with an
NCR chip on, or how much work is required to get the sonic drivers working?
Could I do anything useful towards that, if someone hacked me a kernel
which didn't even look at my ethernet card, thus enabling me to boot?
