A swap file or a swap partition is used to store sections of RAM that
aren't needed immediately, but can't be thrown away, when the operating
system needs more RAM.

How much you need really depends on what you plan to do with the system.
8 or 16 MB is probably sufficient for you--with that amount of disk
space, you won't be compiling too much...  :-)
