I think this scsi driver will help that.  There's still a chance, I
think, that the driver will stay at spl2 long enough to allow the
serial driver's buffers to overflow.  I don't have any easy way to
test it, myself...  If anyone attached via a serial connection is
brave enough to test the new driver, let me know if it's better or
worse.  I think it will be the former.  :-)
