I've never had problems with envstat, either.  It worked on the same
hardware under NetBSD 4.0, but it no longer works in 5.0.  I believe
envstat uses IPMI on this SuperMicro hardware.  envstat works on my
desktop computer (without IPMI).

Can you build a kernel with

        options ENVSYS_DEBUG
        options ENVSYS_OBJECTS_DEBUG

Then, invoke envstat, get it to hang, and send me the dmesg & console logs.
