I'm using envstat from mrtg on several netbsd-5 systems (to graph
temperatures and other sensor values) and I've never seen this

I've never had problems with envstat, either. It worked on the same
hardware under NetBSD 4.0, but it no longer works in 5.0. I believe
envstat uses IPMI on this SuperMicro hardware. envstat works on my
desktop computer (without IPMI).

Can you build a kernel with

        options ENVSYS_DEBUG
        options ENVSYS_OBJECTS_DEBUG

Then, invoke envstat, get it to hang, and send me the dmesg & console logs.
