I've tried to install NetBSD/i386 on a Dell OptiPlex 745 using an
installation CD made from -current sources CVS updated on 21 June
2007.

The first problem I encountered was the USB keyboard didn't work so I
couldn't get beyond sysinst's first menu. Using a PS/2 keyboard
instead I was able to look at dmesg's output and found there was no
driver for the machine's gigabit ethernet card so I didn't proceed
with the install.

I wonder if there's an immediate solution or if maybe someone is
working on a driver for the ethernet card? Windows XP Device Manager
says it's a Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller.

I'll append dmesg's output to this message.

If there had been a driver for the ethernet card I was going to
install NetBSD on two of these PCs, connect them using a crossover
ethernet cable and see what the transfer rate was when ftp'ing a
large file between them. I've copied a ~ 20 GB file from one to the
other when both were running Windows XP using Windows Explorer and
Windows Task Manager's Networking tab showed a fairly constant 19%
usage of the 1 Gbps bandwidth. I thought that was unimpressive but I
haven't used gigabit cards before so don't know what's achievable.

I'm told these PCs have 4 GB of RAM installed but XP only sees 3 GB.
I was hoping NetBSD would be able to address all of it as I believe
the 64-bit version of Win XP can, but dmesg only reports ~ 3 GB.
Perhaps NetBSD/amd64 could see it all and that's what I should have
been trying to install?
