Thanks to Martin Husemann, I've (mostly) resolved this issue.  Creating 
/emul/linux as he suggested got Linux binaries to execute.  There are 
still some not-yet resolved library issues with firefox, but that may 
be solved by reinstalling, now that the infrastructure is in place 
correctly.

Can you try to do

  mkdir /emul
  cd /emul
  ln -s /usr/pkg/emul/linux .

and see if that helps?

Sorry, I'm not competent in pkgsrc stuff - I think it used to set this up
automatically, but maybe only if /emul already was present (see man 
compat_linux for details).
