You should also be able to get /boot (from the install cd) to do a
directory listing of /.
(probably: device hd0a\n ls)

What does 'dumpfs -s /dev/rwd0a' give ?

You might need to mount the filesystem, then chroot into it in order
to run a dynamically linked dumpfs.
