I'm actually using a 2.1 kernel (with 2.0 userland).

FWIW I tried this reader on a 3.99.9 box at work which has

     $NetBSD: usb_subr.c,v 1.129 2005/08/26 12:42:11 drochner Exp $

and everything worked fine.
So I guess I'll be setting up a 3.0 (or -current) box for this.
