I will be back by the system again next week.  I don't track the RAID
controller changes, but I don't recall ever seeing this problem with
NetBSD-2.x at all.  Might it be helpful to baseline back to 2.x and see if
the problem exists there?  (my system is part of a project that has stalled
for other reasons and I can do most anything with it)
