Hi Peter!

My advice to you: Try replacing the RAM.

I had similar effects on my home PC some time ago: after running well for
years (over many kernel upgrades etc.), the machine started to panic
during building the system (only!) at some point. memtest86 didn't find
any of the two 128MB modules broken, so I stopped building the system, and
everything was fine, no crashes. WinXP also ran fine all the time (used
for playing Counter Strike only).

A few weeks ago, I decided to do a RAM upgrade, replacing the 2*128MB by
2*512MB, and all of a sudden I can rebuild the whole OS again, no more
panics.

*I* still blame the RAM being broken, even as memtest86 said it's fine
(running for hours).
